Ok, you've found my website, but why are you here? It would be nice if you had a design project that you were interested in me to working on. If that's not the case I won't mind if you're just here to find out about me... with a bit of luck you'll like what you see and get in touch...

I'm a creative type based in Newquay, Cornwall, working with all kinds of media for over twelve years. I'm especially excited by graphic design, web design, new media and photography. I love creative design and typography, the way it can turn a persons head and make them think. I enjoy seeing a blank canvas fill with ideas that convey a message, a feeling or an idea. I mainly specialise in;

  • Print Design: posters, brochures, flyers, tickets, promotional material.
  • Web Design: websites, social media setup, e-shot campaigns, site optimisation.
  • Identity Design: logos, advertisements.

Take a look at my portfolio for examples of some of the recent work I have completed and give me a shout if something catches your eye...

Joe's Paddle For Life

The Joe Way Paddle for Life event is due to be held in Newquay on the 23rd September 2010. Please take the time to check over the website and get involved if you can...

The original Paddle for Life started after lifeguards from Fistral Beach held a Joe Way memorial paddle to raise money for charity in 2008. Joe is the inspirational little boy who touched people's lives around the country and beyond. His story of hope and fighting against all the odds with a cheeky smile has made what could have been the worse of times the best of times.

Our aim is to raise awareness of Joe's story and inspire people to raise money for their chosen charity, to promote the paddle as a community event for people of all abilities and within five years to have 50 paddles and to raise £50,000 for various charity's.

Podcast, Board & Book

The Paddle for Life surf board has just been unveiled and what a board it is. Standing at over 9 foot long the board is an impressive advert for the Joe Way Paddle for Life. Designed and built by Skindog Surfboards using decals designed by me, I don't think anyone will miss this board on the beach. It is already getting lots of attention from the media and local press.

I have also just finished the new intro and outro sequences for the Paddle for Life podcasts. Check out the portfolio section of the site to see both videos.

Finally, I have just put a Blurb book together to show of some of my best photographs. The book looks pretty impressive, click here to see an online page turning version and see for yourself.

All in all a pretty busy few weeks...

My Photos Get Published In Local Paper

A couple of weeks ago surfing legend Kai Lenny was visiting Newquay as part of the Oxbow world tour. Whilst here Kai agreed to help promote the Joe Way 'Paddle for Life' and agreed to some promotional shots whilst surfing at Watergate Bay.

I went along to photograph Kai along with Ben Skinner, a local surf legend who runs the Skin Dog Surf School, and the new' Paddle for Life' surf board, which incidently I also designed. Both of the photos used by the paper in the article are from that photo shoot.

Pretty cool surf board if I do say so myself.

sd:creative Live

Well, here it is, I've been considering updating my personal web space for a while now as I want to showcase my work professionally and there was only so much I could do with my old vCard based site. I wanted a site that looked polished whilst still being easy to update and maintain, this is what I came up with.

The site is built using the jQuery library and based on a template so I can't take credit for all the coding but that said it is definately looking good and shows what I can do with a little patience. It feels a little strange typing entries in as code rather than using a CMS but hey, it works and I'm happy...

The portfolio section is perfect, allowing me to show off latest projects easily, I especally like the way the items can be categorised. The news section seems a little fiddely to update so may look at adding a CMS just for this section. To find out more just get in touch...

TB Surfing Goes Live

After much discussion and tweaking Tom Butlers website, www.tbsurfing.com, finally goes live today. It's been a rollercoaster couple of weeks getting the site ready, designing the logo and colour scheme etc but the final result looks great.

Tom Butler is an amateur surfer from Newquay who is about to turn semi-pro. He needed a website to promote himself to potential sponsors, let people know what he was up to and advertise his surf coaching business whilst still reflecting his laid back, surfer style.

The site is built using the Joomla CMS system, and is a great example of what you can do with the framework. One of the requests about this site build was that it had to be as simple as possible to update, bearing this in mind the site is fully editable from the front end, if you can use MS Word you can update this site.

Joe's Banner Facelift

It has been over twelve months since the original map site went live, basically just a cut up picture with pop up photos to click on. I had always intended to create a full site for the map but just never got around to it.

Joe Way's banner is a way of getting his inspirational story promoted around the world whilst giving anyone the opportunity get involved. The site was put together to inspire people to help and take part as well as showing where the banner had been taken.

The updated site is based on a jQuery one page template I found on the web, a bit of tweaking and the site was ready to go live within a few days. Very simple but effective. I especially like the navigation menu that the site uses, again a jQuery plugin, and the footer navigation bar that I have started adding to certain sites I design.

Attraction Campaign

When asked to come up with a new idea for an advertising campaign being run by Twenty Twenty Marketing for a local attraction I jumped at the chance. It's not often that I get the opportunity to do something from scratch as most of the print design I work on involves ammending a current concept.

The campaign was for the Shipwreck and Heratige Centre in Charlestown, Cornwall. They already had some advertising litreture but it was thought that something fresh was required for this campaign. The design, colour scheme etc was all a radical departure from what I had been given as reference material.

Needless to say the design was approved.

Fishwick Goes Live

As a favor to a friend, for reasons I won't go into here, I agreed to put together a site for Bolton based business Fishwick Monumental Masons, a company who specialise in creating and engraving headstones and memorials.

The site is built on the Joomal CMS framework, a great system to put together a site quickly and effortlessly once the initial learning curve has been overcome.

The site had to look clean and tidy, something I think has been achieved.
